Women, same classes, written for you

Muay Thai for women in Bristol.

Same Mixed Adults class as everyone else, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. This page exists because the questions women ask before a first class are different, and they deserve straight answers.

The honest bit

What holds most women back, and what's true here

“I'll be the only woman”

Usually three or four women in any Mixed Adults class, out of [N]. Not half the room, and we won't pretend it is. Enough that you will have someone to pair with. Ask Gary which night tends to have the most.

“I don't want to get hit”

Most of the class is pads and drills. Nobody hits you. Sparring comes at the end, and it's optional: light, controlled, and supervised by Gary. Nobody is made to spar.

“I'm not fit enough”

Nobody is, at first. You work at your pace, and the coach scales every drill.

“I'll feel watched”

Everyone is too busy with their own pads. And you can pair with another woman for your first few sessions if you'd prefer.

Your first class

Minute by minute

  1. 1

    Before

Message Gary on Instagram or WhatsApp and ask anything. Turn up 15 minutes early; we're inside CrossFit Bristol North in Cheswick Village. Leggings and a t-shirt is fine.

  2. 2

    Warm up

Skipping and shadow boxing. Coach shows you stance and a jab, cross, kick.

  3. 3

    Pads

Paired up. You hit, they hold, then swap. We'll pair you with someone friendly on day one.

  4. 4

    After

Quick chat with the coach. No hard sell. Come back when you're ready.

Your coach

The coach is a man. Here's how that works.

Gary runs every class. He used to run a separate ladies' class; not enough people came, so the women who did train joined the mixed class instead, and that's how it has been since. Things he does as standard: pairs you with another woman on day one if you'd like, checks in before he corrects anything hands-on, keeps sparring light and controlled, and never makes anyone spar, and answers messages himself.

FAQ

Questions we get asked most

Is the coach a man?

Yes. There is one coach, Gary. See how he runs classes above, and message him first if you want to ask anything before you come.

Can I come with a friend?

Yes. Book two trials and we'll pair you up.

I've never held pads. Is that a problem?

Not at all. You'll be shown how, step by step. We go slowly and at a pace that suits you, so you learn it properly and feel comfortable before anything speeds up.

What do I wear? Is there somewhere to change?

Shorts or leggings you can move in, and a t-shirt or vest that isn't restrictive. If you've got gloves and shin pads, bring them. If you're new, don't worry, we've got kit at the gym. Bring a bottle of water. Leave your ego at the door. [CHANGING ROOM / SHOWER DETAILS].

Is it safe getting to and from the gym in the evening?

[ANSWER: lighting, parking, bus stop, walk-out-together culture]

Can I train while pregnant or after having a baby?

[ANSWER: talk to the coach, doctor sign-off]

Do I have to spar?

No. Sparring is never compulsory and nobody is made to spar. We encourage it because it's where the drills turn into skills you can actually use, in a calm, safe setting. It's always light and controlled, and Gary watches every round. This isn't a hard-sparring gym. You might see fighters going a bit harder on our socials when they're preparing for a bout, but that's fight prep, not the normal class.
